WA: Police chief defends officers accused of dropping sex case

Western Australia's police chief has defended high-ranking officers at the centre ofclaims they did not properly investigate allegations a former football star sexually abuseda child.

The woman who's made the allegations wants a police royal commission to investigate, saying the former Australia Rules footballer escaped charges because of his police connections.

Through his lawyer, the sportsman has denied the sex abuse accusation.

He was allegedly investigated by the WA police child sex abuse unit in 1998, and fourformer officers there support the woman's claim.

However Police Commissioner BARRY MATTHEWS has defended the senior officers who calledfor the matter to be dropped.

He says the Director of Public Prosecutions found there was not enough evidence --and he says a review of evidence by senior officers should not be regarded as interferencein an investigation.
