ATHENS, Greece -- In an attempt to make softball more offensive, the pitching mound was moved back from 40 feet to 43 feet and the outfield fences were backed up from 200 feet to 220 feet. What the International Softball Federation didn't count on was pitchers Cat Osterman and Juri Takayama and a 31 mph wind.
Osterman pitched a one-hitter Monday but needed eight innings to get her first Olympic victory as Japanese pitcher Takayama no-hit the Americans through 7 1/3 innings. The U.S. scored its first run before it got its first hit, but ended up with three hits and a 3-0 victory over the pesky Japanese. …
