Qld: Beattie for Brazil, Chile and the US

Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE will make a 14-day trip to the United States, Chile
and Brazil next month, with sugar high on his agenda.

Mr BEATTIE has told state parliament he will leave Brisbane on May the 26th to promote
the sugar industry in Brazil and biotechnology industries in the US.

During the first visit to Brazil by a Queensland premier, Mr BEATTIE will discuss value
adding Australian sugar with Brazil's agriculture minister.

And he says he will explore partnerships with Brazil's lead agency -- responsible for
more than 60 per cent of Brazilian sugar production.

Mr BEATTIE also plans to hold talks with major ethanol producers.

He is inviting representatives from the Queensland sugar industry to join him on the trip.

While in the US, Mr BEATTIE will lead a delegation to the BIO2004 biotechnology event
in San Francisco.
